About Omuta Kumano Shrine

This is the Official Shrine Shop (juyosho - place for Official Shrine Shop - spiritual items/services) of Omuta Kumano Shrine, the guiding deity. Our shrine was founded in 533 (the 3rd year of Emperor Ankan's reign) to enshrine the ancestral deities of local powerful clans as their tutelary gods. In 825 (the 2nd year of Tencho's reign), a divided spirit (bunrei) was enshrined from Kumano, Wakayama Prefecture. Since then, it has accumulated 1500 years of history as an ancient shrine in the Omuta region, and continues to this day as one of the most revered shrines in the area.

Kumano faith is characterized by its deep inclusivity, accepting all people regardless of social status, age, or gender. As the saying goes, "It does not choose between believers and non-believers, nor does it dislike purity or impurity." Due to its tolerant nature, Kumano faith opened its doors even to women, who were treated as impure during the Heian period. It is said that so many people flocked to Kumano to worship that it led to a phenomenon called "Ari no Kumano-mode" (Ants' Pilgrimage to Kumano).
This magnanimous spirit of Kumano faith is at the heart of our shrine's beliefs.
